Patterns in Russian diary-writing
This case study examined words appearing around references to “diary” in a collection of Russian diaries. Recurring patterns were grouped into modes of diary-writing labelled “Spirit,” “Literary,” “Interpersonal,” “Form,” and “Routine,” and their relative frequency was compared across time.
The example showed how computational grouping can make a broad archive navigable and turn repeated language into evidence about cultural practice. The stability of the patterns was itself informative: analysis can reveal continuity as well as change.
